Mr Steve Flavin has been appointed as the founding Headteacher of King’s School, established in Brighton and Hove in September 2013.

After attending Corsham School, in Wiltshire, where he was Head Boy, Mr Flavin gained a degree in Music and Education from the University of Winchester and a Master’s Degree in Education from Bath Spa University.

Mr Flavin’s first teaching post was as a music teacher at the Hurst School in Basingstoke and he then served as a Head of Faculty in Bristol. Mr Flavin was appointed as Deputy Head at Churchfields School, Wiltshire and within a year he was promoted to be its Headteacher.  When he started, the school’s GCSE results were very poor, 8% gaining 5+ A* to C grade  (including English and Maths). He leaves Churchfields a happy, thriving Academy and a specialist Mathematics, Science and Computing College. Nearly 60% of students now gain 5+ GSCE grades A*-C (including English and Maths). This is a remarkable achievement, given the school serves an area of high social deprivation in Swindon. The progress that children make once at Churchfields is recognised as exceptional. In recognition of his contribution to education, Mr Flavin has had visits from the Secretary of State for Education and he was invited to meet the Prime Minister at Number 10. Mr Flavin also took part in the National College for School Leadership’s Consultant Leader and Executive Headteacher Programmes.

Mr Flavin is a committed Christian, playing an active role in his church.  His wife is the Assistant Head of a school for children with Special Educational Needs and he has three children, two at University and one studying GCSEs.  Among his interests he lists walking, classical music and Edwardian history.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Flavin said, “I will work together to make King’s School a beacon of success in the area. My goal is that King’s School gains recognition both locally and nationally as a centre of excellence for education and values-based learning.”

Richard Elms from the school’s academy sponsor, the Russell Education Trust, said “Mr Flavin’s experience and expertise and the Russell Education Trust will secure the success of King’s School.”

Chair of the Shadow Governing Body, Sue Worthing said, “We are thrilled to welcome Mr Flavin as our founding Headteacher."
