Key Stage 3 Key Stage 4 Sixth Form

Weeks 1-6: Moi et mon college

In this unit, pupils learn to describe themselves, to talk about school subjects, learn to ask questions, to give opinions and reasons, to describe their school timetable using the 12-hour clock, to compare their school day to that in France and to learn about food.

There will be two assessments. Dependent upon the class, this will include one unseen reading or listening and one unseen speaking or writing. Decisions are made by the class teacher dependent upon class strengths and areas for development. Details will be on Show My Homework as will a grammar and vocab sheet to prepare for this assessment.

Develop the individual:
Students will learn to talk about their own personalities and hobbies and those of others. They will also reflect on the differences between school life in France and in Britain.

Create a supportive community:
Students appreciate differences in personality between different people. They also gain cultural understanding of life in France.

Weeks 7 to 12: Mes passe-temps

In this unit, pupils learn to talk about computers and mobiles, to say which sports they play using “jouer à” and which activities they do using “faire”, to say what they like doing using the verb “aimer” and to describe what activities others do

There will be two assessments. Dependent upon the class, this will include one unseen reading or listening and one unseen speaking or writing. Decisions are made by the class teacher dependent upon class strengths and areas for development. Details will be on Show My Homework as will a grammar and vocab sheet to prepare for this assessment. Assessments could take up to three lessons to complete and students will be tested on their ability to use two very important verbs (to do "faire" and to play "jouer"). They will also be tested on their ability to give their opinion and potentially talk about someone else too.

Weeks 13 to 18: Ma zone

In this unit, pupils learn to talk about their town or village using “il y a”, to give directions, to talk about where they go at the weekend using “à”, to ask people to go somewhere using “je veux” to say what you can do in town using “on peut”, and to learn facts about France.

There will be two assessments. Dependent upon the class, this will include one unseen reading or listening and one unseen speaking or writing. Decisions are made by the class teacher dependent upon class strengths and areas for development. Details will be on Show My Homework as will a grammar and vocab sheet to prepare for this assessment. The assessments will take up to three lessons and will be on the topic of weekend activities, describing a town, asking a friend to go somewhere in town and giving directions.

Create a supportive community:
This modules gives students greater cultural understanding and allows them to use language creatively in sensitive situations.

Weeks 19 to 24: 3…2…1…Partez!

In this unit, pupils learn to use “nous” to talk about their holidays and those of others using the present and near future, to discuss getting ready to go out using reflexive verbs, to buy drinks and snacks using higher numbers, to say what they would like to do using “je voudrais”.

There will be two assessments. Dependent upon the class, this will include one unseen reading or listening and one unseen speaking or writing. Decisions are made by the class teacher dependent upon class strengths and areas for development. Details will be on Show My Homework as will a grammar and vocab sheet to prepare for this assessment. The assessments will take up to three lessons and will be based around the topic of holidays (countries where to go, what activities students do during holidays, using "we" as well as "I".) Students will also be tested on numbers and food and how to order some food and how much it costs.

Students gain awareness of the world around them and can use language for their own purpose.

Weeks 25 to 30: Harry Potter

This unit is based upon the first Harry Potter film. In this context, students learn to describe others’ physical attributes and characteristics, to learn about different family members, to describe birthdays and other celebrations, to discuss the rules of Quidditch and compare to other sports, and to begin to work with the perfect tense.

For this unit, students will be asked to create an end of unit poster using all the vocabulary and grammar taught. They will using what they have learnt as well as their creative skills. This could take up to two lessons.They will also undertake a reading assessment.

Students learn that pop-culture transcends country boundaries, and they discuss right and wrong and reasonable/unreasonable personality traits. They also learn not to judge on appearance.

Create a supportive community:
Students engage with authentic cultural material and learn to become more tolerant regarding their own and others' personality and appearance.

Weeks 31 to 36: Studio découverte

This is a project-based unit, in which pupils will learn to talk about animals, their habitats, characters and physical characteristics. Students will also learn about French poets and poetry, including the surrealist poet Robert Desnos, who was imprisoned during the French occupation. The unit will also focus on French artists, with students learning how to how to research and describe artworks using the perfect tense.

Students will be assessed on their ability to: describe an animal, write a little poem or describe a painting.
